लोकप्रिय पौराणिक परंपरेनुसार, माता पार्वतीने एका बालकाची निर्मिती करून त्याला आपण आत असताना प्रवेशद्वाराची राखण करण्याची आज्ञा दिली.

भगवान शिव परतले तेव्हा त्या बालकाने पार्वतीची आज्ञा प्रामाणिकपणे पाळत त्यांना आत जाण्यापासून रोखले. त्यातून संघर्ष झाला आणि त्या बालकाचे मस्तक छिन्न झाले.

पार्वतीचे दुःख पाहून भगवान शिवांनी त्या बालकाला पुन्हा जीवन देण्याचा निर्णय घेतला. हत्तीचे मस्तक लावून त्याला पुनर्जीवित करण्यात आले आणि तो पुढे भगवान गणेश म्हणून ओळखला जाऊ लागला. त्याला गणांचा अधिपती आणि प्रत्येक शुभकार्याच्या प्रारंभी पूजला जाणारा देव असा मान मिळाला.

ही गणपतीची कथा विविध पिढ्यांमध्ये अनेक स्वरूपांत सांगितली गेली आहे. परंतु तिच्यामधील मूल्ये आजही तितकीच महत्त्वाची आहेत—कर्तव्य, प्रेम, स्वीकार, परिवर्तन आणि नव्या सुरुवातीची आशा.

The story of Lord Ganesha: a story of duty and new beginnings

According to a popular mythological tradition, Goddess Parvati created a young boy and asked him to guard the entrance while she was inside.

When Lord Shiva returned, the boy faithfully followed Parvati’s instruction and did not allow him to enter. A conflict followed, and the boy lost his head.

Seeing Parvati’s grief, Shiva restored the child to life with the head of an elephant. The child came to be known as Ganesha and was blessed as the leader of the ganas and the deity to be worshipped before auspicious beginnings.

The story has been told in different forms across generations, but its larger ideas remain powerful: duty, transformation, acceptance, love and renewal.

These are also values that literature preserves beautifully. Stories allow one generation to pass its wisdom to another, which is why mythology, folklore, children’s literature and books on Indian culture continue to remain an important part of our reading tradition.

• Use decorations made from cloth, paper, bamboo, flowers, leaves and reusable materials.
• Reduce plastic and thermocol.
• Separate flowers and nirmalya for composting where facilities are available.
• Use designated artificial immersion tanks or responsible immersion facilities provided by local authorities.
• Keep sound levels considerate.
• Reuse decorations instead of purchasing disposable décor every year.
• Include activities such as book donation, reading sessions, storytelling, tree plantation and community service.

Eco-friendly celebration is not about making the festival smaller. It is about making its meaning larger.

What can Lord Ganesha teach today’s reader?
