About us
An independent, woman-led Marathi publishing house from Shrirampur — carrying serious literature from a small-town press to readers’ doors since 1980.
Shrirampur, Maharashtra · Est. 1980 “पुस्तकाची वारी आपल्या दारी” — the pilgrimage of books, to your door
Shabdalaya Prakashan is more than a publishing house. It is a literary movement — rooted in conviction, resilience and an unwavering belief in the power of the written word.
When Shabdalaya began in Shrirampur, Marathi publishing lived almost entirely in the big cities. An independent, woman-led house from a small town in Ahilyanagar district set out to change that — to give voice to meaningful literature, to nurture authentic expression, and to take books beyond urban privilege into the wider social and cultural life of Maharashtra.
The early years were built entirely on self-reliance: editorial selection, production, design, distribution and reader engagement, all done by hand and by conviction, without institutional backing or a business lineage. The Diwali annual of 1985 was the first bold step, and the critical response to it affirmed a simple truth — literary excellence, guided by integrity, finds its readers.
46 years on, the house is home to some of the most influential voices in Marathi literature and a launchpad for new ones. The founding vision is now carried forward by the next generation — with modern publishing, digital distribution and this online bookshop — while the principles remain what they were: quality, authenticity and cultural responsibility.
The dates the house counts from, and every honour it has recorded — the newest at the end.

Sahitya Akademi awards and Maharashtra State awards for the books; novels on university syllabi; and, in 2023, the Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Prakashak Sangh’s awards to the house itself — for outstanding book production and outstanding Diwali annual production.
We take books to readers, rather than wait for readers to come to books.
Through exhibitions, book tours and literary gatherings across Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka and the tribal regions — in small towns as much as in cities — Shabdalaya has spent decades widening who gets to read, especially young readers and first-generation book lovers.
Our own Pustakwari in Shrirampur, the stalls at the sahitya sammelans and the district book festivals carry that work on today.

Alongside celebrated authors, the house consistently publishes first books — fresh perspectives held to the same rigorous standard.
Long-standing collaborations with renowned artists for cover art, illustration and design — so each book is a visual experience worthy of its text.
Deeply rooted in the Marathi literary tradition, and open to modern publishing, digital access and new ways of reaching readers — without moving the core.
