In her autobiographical article Mazi Prakashanyatra, Shabdalaya Prakashan founder Sumati Lande recounts her journey of building a Marathi bookshop, distribution network and independent publishing organisation. The article documents how Shabdalaya overcame limited finances and the challenges of a small-town book market to strengthen Marathi reading culture.
In the autobiographical article Mazi Prakashanyatra, Sumati Lande describes the challenges, decisions and experiences that shaped the early journey of Shabdalaya.
Raising the initial capital required to establish a bookshop was the first major challenge. A bank loan helped finance the premises, furniture and opening stock. Shabdalaya Book Depot was inaugurated in Shrirampur in April 1983 by noted Marathi poet Na. Dho. Mahanor.
Creating a sustainable market for books in Shrirampur was difficult because the local economy was largely connected with agriculture and the sugar industry. Books were not everyday purchases, and waiting for customers to visit the shop was not enough. Shabdalaya therefore adopted a reader-focused approach and carried books directly to potential customers.
The organisation developed relationships with schools, colleges, libraries and readers in neighbouring villages. It supplied textbooks and general reading material while helping readers identify and obtain the books they needed.
Literary conferences, library movements and interaction with writers and readers across Maharashtra expanded Shabdalaya’s network. These experiences gradually led from bookselling and distribution towards independent Marathi publishing.
The article is more than an account of one woman’s entrepreneurial journey. It also documents the realities of the Marathi book trade, rural distribution, library networks and the development of reading culture in small-town Maharashtra.
