Sumati Lande on Shabdalaya and the Next Generation of Publishing
1 December 2015
Recalling Shabdalaya’s first Diwali issue and her early experience selling books, Sumati Lande encourages a new generation to enter publishing with new technology.
In this interview, Sumati Lande looks back on Shabdalaya’s early years. She describes meeting readers through a bookshop in Shrirampur and the difficulty of selling books when the shop was outside the town centre. She then tried selling books near the railway station, an experience that helped her understand where readers could more easily find them.
Lande also recounts the idea behind the Shabdalaya Diwali magazine. After observing other Diwali issues, she decided to publish one herself with help from colleagues. The interview states that the first issue appeared in 1985. Its prominent message is forward looking: Lande wants younger people to enter the publishing business with new technology. Together, these recollections make the page a useful record of Shabdalaya’s origins and her views on Marathi publishing’s future.
